Protecting Sarasota's Waterways

Wild Cause & Sarasota Bay Estuary Program

At Wild Cause, we believe in taking action to protect our natural resources. With the current pace at which we are consuming resources, soon the time will come when we will struggle to meet basic needs. That's why we're proud to support and participate in the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, working alongside local advocates to protect and restore our waterways. Clean water is essential for our communities, wildlife, and future generations, and by taking small actions and incorporating them into our daily lives, every homeowner can play a role in preserving our water resources.

Why Protecting Our Waterways Matter?

Sarasota's waterways are not only beautiful but also vital to our ecosystem, economy, and way of life. Their diverse ecology is home to several marine animals and also drives tourism, making them essential for both the environment and the community. However, these waters face increasing threats from pollution, stormwater runoff, habitat destruction, and climate change. The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program is dedicated to safeguarding our waters through advocacy, community engagement, and restoration projects.

Wild Cause is committed to supporting these efforts and inspiring our community to take action. Through education, local cleanups, and advocacy, we work together to keep our waters clean and restore the natural ecosystem.

Want to Join Us in Cleanup Drives?

We always welcome people who would like to support us in our endeavors. Here are a few ways you can join us and the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program in making a difference:

  • Participate in Cleanups – Join local cleanup events to remove trash and debris from Sarasota's rivers, lakes, and beaches, rejuvenating the ecosystem.
  •  Reduce Runoff Pollution – Adopt sustainable ways to reduce pollution by using rain barrels, planting native landscaping, and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals in your yard.
  • Avoid Plastic Waste – Plastic is a slow poison to the ecosystem, so opt for reusable bottles and bags to reduce water pollution.
  • Support Wetland & Shoreline Restoration – From time to time, you can get involved in planting projects that help restore natural habitats by planting regional plant-life forms to restore the ecological balance of the river.

Advocate for Clean Water Policies – Join groups and social media channels to stay informed about local environmental policies and support initiatives that protect our water sources.

How Home Owners Can Help Protect Waterways?

Every household plays a crucial role in water conservation and preventing pollution, and when combined, these efforts can significantly impact the health of Sarasota's waterways. Small, everyday actions can collectively reduce pollution, improve water quality, and help sustain the region's delicate ecosystem. By making mindful choices, homeowners can contribute to protecting Sarasota's rivers, bays, and coastal waters for future generations. Here are some effective ways households can actively support clean and healthy waterways:

Inside the Home:

  • Fix Leaks Promptly – A single leaky faucet may not seem like a big deal, but in the long run, it can lead to wastage of thousands of gallons of water annually. Repairing leaks can save tons of water and money.
  • Use Water-Efficient Fixtures – Install Water Sense-labeled toilets, showerheads, and faucets to cut down on water usage. These high-efficiency fixtures help conserve water, reduce bills, and protect Sarasota's waterways.
  • Run Full Loads in Dishwashers and Washing Machines – It is a simple habit that helps minimize water waste and energy use. A half load uses the same amount of energy and water as a full load, so using it when completely full is more efficient than using a half load.
  • Limit Garbage Disposal Use - Do you have food scraps? Instead of throwing them in the garbage, put them in compost, which can contribute to the fertility of the land and reduce water pollution.

Turn off the Tap - Don't let water run while brushing your teeth or washing dishes. Try to use water efficiently without wasting any.

Outside the Home:

  • Choose Native Plants for Landscaping – Native plants of that region require less water, as they are already accustomed to that place, reducing the need for frequent irrigation.
  • Use Mulch in Gardens – Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing evaporation and keeping plants hydrated. This minimizes the need for frequent watering, conserving water, and supporting plant health.
  • Water Lawns Wisely – Water in the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation and ensure better soil absorption. This helps plants stay hydrated while conserving water.
  • Avoid Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides – Avoid using excessive fertilizers and pesticides, as lawn runoff can carry these chemicals into local waterways, polluting the water and harming aquatic life.
  • Use a Rain Barrel - Rainwater is an excellent source of freshwater. Collecting rainwater for irrigation reduces reliance on municipal water supplies, which helps maintain water levels.

By making these small but meaningful changes, homeowners can contribute to the long-term health of Sarasota's waterways.
